Recycle Your Binders

Check out the new program available through Staples & TerraCycle:

Staples, the Office Superstore, is now operating an everyday program to collect binders in their stores nationwide! This includes ALL Staples stores, you do not have to go to a specific location to find this program. You can make your back-to-school shopping eco-friendly by bringing your empty, used binders to a Staples store near you. When you bring your empty binder(s) to the checkout counter, you will be given a $2 credit toward the new binder you want to purchase*.
In 2012, Staples launched the first retail-based collection program for binders. Today, that collection program is an everyday offering. Operated in conjunction with Avery®, the goal of the program is to help the environment while incentivizing shoppers to recycle.
To participate, all you have to do is bring in your old (and empty) binder to any Staples location. When you turn in your binder(s) at the check-out counter, you should bring the binder(s) that you want to purchase with you. For each binder you turn in, you will receive a $2 credit toward your new binder purchases*. By bringing your old binders to Staples stores, you are helping to keep these binders out of the garbage, and ultimately out of landfills. Every binder that we collect through this program will be recycled and used in the creation of new products.
Binder Recycling Program at STAPLES accepted waste: all makes and models of binders
*Note: This is a one-for-one program (one $2 binder recycle credit for each binder purchased) and there is no cash back. The value of the recycling credit cannot exceed the purchase price of the binder being bought. The program is for same-day purchases at the time of the transaction and will not be honored for future purchased. This program also does not apply to the purchase of any Simply brand binders.
This is a great idea for anyone who hasn't purchased new binders for this school year yet or for anyone going back to college in January. Great program! Thanks Staples & TerraCycle.

Back to Blogging. Check out these Method Products!

So it's been awhile since I've written in my blog. I'm hoping to start back up with it and post on a more normal basis from now on. Well I've moved recently and I just wanted to talk about some of the new products I've used since I've been in my new place. I am a huge fan of the Method products and I bought some of their new Orla Kiely designed hand soap bottles in Vanilla Chai and Primrose. I absolutely love these bottles which are a little fancier than their normal ones. I prefer the Vanilla Chai scent over the Primrose but I would recommend these to anyone looking for a more stylish bottle to refill. I realize when I run out that I will most likely not be able to refill them with the original scents but I can always use any of the method refills and maintain my gorgeously designed bottles. I usually get my Method products from Target if you're looking for a place to buy them and quite often they go on sale so if you aren't looking to pay full price, keep checking back and I'm sure you'll find them on sale.

1% For the Planet

While searching through a number of companies that support 1% for the Planet, I noticed there aren't a lot of companies that most would recognize. There are 1,495 companies that donate 1% of their sales to a network of 2,806 environmental organizations worldwide. I've compiled a list of all the businesses in NY that support 1% and left a few details about some of the companies that sparked my interest. Feel free to check em out, look into them if you're interested, or let me know and I'll do some research for ya!

Elementem Art & Design
Emmy's Organics - This is another one that caught my attention. They have organic products that are sold locally in Nature's Pantry and Mother Earth Storehouse. They are extremely careful about what they use to package their products because they know how much waste just goes into landfills. They recycle their cans & bottles, compost their food scraps, use rags instead of paper towels, donate old electronics and a whole lot more.

Cymbal of Love Pendant

So as most of you already know, I'm a fan of Uncommon Goods and almost all of their products. Found this cute gift in one of the e-mails they sent me and thought I should tell everyone about it. It's a necklace made from repurposed broken cymbals and recycled guitar strings. Super awesome gift idea for any music lover.

Shredder Events at HVFCU

Last year HVFCU held a Shredder Event where members recycled about 28 tons of material, translating into a savings of over 450 trees, 85 cubic yards of landfill, 190,000 gallons of water, and 10,000 gallons of oil. Since the event had such success last year, they've increased the number of events they are having this year to fifteen, with the goal of surpassing last year's collections. Their events are free for members, but you need to limit yourself to three boxes of materials to shred. They create a limit so that all members have the opportunity to have their materials shred. Here is a listing of when the events are and which materials are or are not accepted.
